Christy was an American artist and illustrator perhaps best known for creating the "Christy Girl," the spirited successor to the "Gibson Girl" and the iconic WWI patriotic posters for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Christy also painted the portraits of presidents, senators, industrialists, movies stars, and socialites including Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman, William Randolph Hearst, the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII), Benito Mussolini, and Amelia Earhart. By 1938, Christ was proclaimed the most commercially successful U.S. artist by Time magazine. |
