Hill was an English-born American artist of the 19th century best known for his landscape paintings of the California hills, Yosemite Valley, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Considered a Hudson River School artist, Hill painted idealized, visionary landscapes that conveyed their monumental and momentous qualities. Incidentally, Hill's brother Edward was a noted American landscape painter, while Thomas Hill's grandson, Norman Rockwell, was a noted American genre painter. |
