Description |
This large stein is attributed to Zanesville Glass Works (Circa 1815-1835) and was made from clear flint glass. Although its cylindrical body and large applied handle are remarkably solid, the piece's true significance lies in it's wonderful polished pontil base and hand-tooled engraving on the vessel that reads "Jacob Kappes / Putnam Hotel", which is enclosed in two sheaves of wheat. John Jacob Kappes (1828-1886) owned the Putnam Hotel and had ten children, including Clara Kappes Ayers, co-founder of the ZMA, and Karl Kappes, an artist whose paintings and decorated pottery are on view at the musuem. |
