Description |
New York artist Hugh Gumpel (1926-2011) studied art at Columbia University, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and the Arts Students League where he learned the subtle art of watercolor. He is perhaps best known for his landscapes and cityscapes, including the work Philadelphia, painted in 1956. This work was donated to the Zanesville Museum of Art from the collection of the Henry W. Ranger Fund, Academy of Arts and Letters, New York. Ranger (1858-1916), a prominent American artist of the late nineteenth century, was a full academician of the National Academy of Design and bequeathed his estate to the academy, establishing the Henry W. Ranger Fund. This fund provided for the purchase of paintings by living American artists, which were either accessioned by the Smithsonian Institution, then National Collection of Fine Arts, or distributed to organizations like the Academy of Arts and Letters, New York. |
