Description |
An example of Rookwood Pottery Company's Standard Glaze introduced in 1884, this tankard, shape number 564D, was hand decorated by Mary Madeline Nourse (1870-1959) in 1893 and features branches and pinecones painted on an airbrushed background. An incised "L" on the vessel's underside instructed the glaze staff to use the "light" yellow version of the Standard glaze. Given its name because it was the standard product line produced by Rookwood during the company's early years, the Standard line received international recognition at the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris. |
