Description |
A wonderful example of the Rookwood Pottery Company's (1880-1967) Dull Finish glaze, first introduced around 1884, this vase features pâte-sur-pâte insects in slight relief decorated by Laura Anne Fry (1857-1943), covered in an extremely thin, clear, matte glaze referred to as a smear glaze, with gilt overglaze decoration. A smear glaze was not directly applied to the object, but instead to the insides of a sagger or clay box that protected the piece from the direct flames of the kiln during firing. As the kiln fired, the glaze would vaporize and settle on the object. It leaves a finish that appears to have no glaze at all. |
