Description |
An example of the Rookwood Pottery Company's (1880-1967) Dull Finish line, which was first introduced around 1884, this vase was painted by Carolyn Frances Steinle (1871-1944) over a decade later in 1896, and features slip-painted daffodils covered in an extremely thin, clear, matte glaze referred to as a smear glaze. Not applied directly to the object, but instead applied to the inside of a saggar or clay box that protected the piece from the direct flames of the kiln, the smear glaze vaporized and settled on the object during firing leaving an imperceptible finish. |
