Description |
Mary Louise McLaughlin (1847-1939) was instrumental in Cincinnati's art pottery movement during the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She was also an accomplished printmaker, China decorator, and painter. This landscape painting was created in 1899 and is a nice example of Tonalism, an artistic movement that favored a restricted color palette, cool tones, and evocative landscapes meant to inspire contemplation. McLaughlin's image of a boat sailing in calm waters set against a sunrise or sunset is serene and reflects her interest in uncomplicated compositions and a simplified color palette. |
