Description |
The Cowan Pottery Studio (1912-1931) was established in Lakewood, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland) in 1912 by R. Guy Cowen (1884-1957), who learned the trade at a young age from his father and grandfather. Eventually moving the operation three and a half miles down the road to Rocky River, Ohio, Cowan Pottery expanded and produced, among other things, vases, comports, candlesticks, candy, and nut dishes that were very successful with the public. Many well-known artists are affiliated with the Cowan Pottery Studio such as Waylande Gregory, Viktor Schreckengost, Thelma Frazier Winter, Margaret Postgate, Paul Bogatay, and many others. Due to financial issues during the Great Depression, Cowan reorganized into an artist colony, Cowan Potters, Inc. and eventually closed in 1931. |
