Description |
This pillow vase is a wonderful example from Weller Pottery Company's Lonhuda Faience line produced circa 1895. The subtle brown, blue, and cream background colors were applied with an atomizer and created a dramatic backdrop for the hand-decorated mulberry leaves and berries that were skillfully painted by the pottery decorator Anna Fulton Best (1874-1955) between 1898 and 1901 when she was in her mid-twenties. Best was born in Kentucky and moved to Zanesville, Ohio in 1898 when she married Nolan R Best (1871-1930) the Editor of the Zanesville Courier. She moved to Chicago in August 1901 with her husband who was offered a new position at a Chicago, Illinois newspaper. |
