Description |
A production piece from the Rookwood Pottery Company (1880-1967), this cast vase, shape number 6548, features birds flying among reeds. Glazed in what is commonly referred to as Wine Madder, this glaze was first introduced in 1943 and was described by the company as a "brownish rose" translucent, high gloss glaze that was intended to be used on a porcelain body. This vase dates to 1942 and may have been either glazed and fired the following year in 1943 or fired in 1942 as an experimental piece. Wine Madder was one of three glazes the company created during the war years from ingredients that were readily available and not deemed essential to the war effort. |
