The donor of this box ,Allan Gerdau, was an eccentric New York collector who valued fine art. A wealthy man by the 1930s having made his fortune as the largest importer of mother-of-pearl in the world, Gerdau purchased a considerable number of Asian, African, and European artworks and artifacts. He was a generous donor and gave away a large portion of his collections to small and mid-sized museums including the Zanesville Museum of Art. |
