Description |
This important mug was created at Weller Pottery Company (1872-1948) likely between 1898 and 1900. This piece belongs to an early line of production pottery commonly referred to as Sprigged Ware, sprigware, or sprig ware and its attribution as a Weller line has been disputed for decades. The works in this line typically feature a dark brown, high-gloss glaze and a cream-colored applied cameo or sprig-molded design. What makes this piece unique, is the hand-incised manufacturer's mark, which reads "S.A.W. / Pottery / Zanesville, Ohio", which confirms that this line was manufactured at Weller Pottery rather than at Peters and Reed Pottery Company (1899-1921). Art pottery collector and researcher Frank Norman believes that this line was most likely created by Albert Radford for Weller from 1898-1900 when Radford worked for the firm. Radford and his father, Edward, produced Radford Jasper Ware (ZMA Radford Jasper Ware Bowl 2015.006.002), which replicated Wedgewood's Jasperware line. |
