Description |
This is a unique handmade tile sample handmade by Henri Gellée (1876-?) in 1905. Gellée, who worked with French ceramicist Jacques Sicard (1865-1923) at Weller Pottery Company on the popular iridescent line of pottery called Sicardo, presented this small tile to the president of Weller's competitor at Roseville Pottery Company. This piece, which was donated to the museum by Mrs. Fenwick S. Clement, the spouse of Roseville President Fenwick Scott Clement, bears the following inscription on the back of the tile: "Presented to Mr. Young, head of Roseville Pottery as a sample in 1905 by the artist, who was later employed by the Weller Pottery." |
