Description |
Clément Massier was born into a family of French ceramists and operated a factory and gallery complex in Golfe-Juan along France's Côte d'Azur, which became a destination for the elite who summered in Monaco, Nice, and Cannes. In 1883, Massier developed an iridescent, metallic luster glaze, which was awarded a gold medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. Massier's student and apprentice, Jacques Sicard would go on to develop an iridescent line called Sicardo for Weller Pottery Company in 1904. This piece was donated to the ZMA by Mrs. Charles G. Runkle (Josephine Ayers Runkle, 1894-1963), Mrs. Russell G. Hay (Elizabeth Ayers Hay, 1892-circa 1959?), Mrs. Charles N. Gorsuch (Margaret Ayers Gorsuch, 1892-1963), three of the four children of the museum founders Edward M. and Clara K. Ayers. |
