Description |
Stangl Pottery (1814-1978), founded as Samuel Hill Pottery in 1814 in Flemington, New Jersey, produced storage crocks and red clay pipes in its early years. In 1860 Abraham Fulper purchased the business and renamed it Fulper Pottery. Fulper and his sons created a line of fireproof cookware along with Germ-Free Filters used to provide potable water in public places. The company also produced dinnerware, candleholders, bookends, perfume lamps, and tobacco jars. Fulper died in 1928 and Johann Martin Stangl became the president. That same year, the company moved to Trenton, New Jersey. The name of the company changed to Stangl Pottery in 1955, but dinnerware had the Stangl mark as early as 1930. Stangl Pottery was also known for their small figurines, the most popular being the "Birds of America" series based on illustrations by John James Audubon and produced in the 1940s through the 1970s. |
