Description |
An example of Weller Pottery Company's early Louwelsa line introduced in 1896, this tankard showcases the talent of pottery decorator Levi J. Burgess (1882-1943) and features a hand-decorated portrait of an Indigenous American against a dark shaded background sprayed on with an atomizer. Portraits or depictions of people of the First Nations or Indigenous Americans were common on American art pottery and captured the early twentieth century nostalgia for the disappearing frontier. Paradoxically, forced migration policies and westward expansion were responsible for the vanishing west and its indigenous populations. |
