Description |
This pillow vase is an example of Weller Pottery Company's early Louwelsa line, which was introduced in 1896. This piece was hand painted by Minnie Helmick Mitchell (1876-1902) and features Nasturtium flowers, leaves, and vines against a dark, shaded background. This tonality was achieved by spraying the background with an atomizer or airbrush. The Louwelsa line was personal to the owner of the concern, Sam Weller, who named the line using the first three letters of Louise, his daughter's name, the first three letters of Weller, and the first two initials of Sam. |
