Description |
This pillow vase is an example of Weller Pottery Company's early Louwelsa line, which was introduced in 1896 and features the fruit of the Buckeye tree, Aesculus glabra, which is the Ohio state tree. Hand painted by an unknown artist; the motif stands out against a dark, shaded background, which was achieved by spraying the vessel's surface with an atomizer or airbrush. The Louwelsa line was personal to the owner of the concern, Sam Weller, who named the line using the first three letters of Louise, his daughter's name, the first three letters of Weller, and the first two initials of Sam. |
