Description |
An example of Weller Pottery Company's early Louwelsa line introduced in 1896, this stein showcases the talent of pottery decorator E. Sulcer (Active 1896) and features a hand-decorated portrait of an Indigenous American on a dark shaded background sprayed on with an atomizer. Portraits or depictions of people of the First Nations or Indigenous Americans were common on American art pottery and captured the early twentieth century nostalgia for the disappearing frontier. Paradoxically, forced migration policies and westward expansion were responsible for the vanishing west and its indigenous populations. |
