Description |
This Royal Worcester vase has an interesting history and provenance. It was given to the ZMA in January 1943 by Sylvester Sherman Humphrey (1894-1975), who inherited the English vase from his grandfather George Robert Humphrey (1828-1912) both Zanesville, Ohio residents. George Humphrey purchased the vase from the estate of his friends Mr. Andrew Irving Edgar and his wife Mrs. Maria Harriet Edgar. Mrs. Edgars lived in London, England before immigrating to the United States in 1848 and received this rather grand vase as a parting gift by a friend who was a maid to Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Duchess of Kent-Strathearn (1786-1861) the mother of Queen Victoria (1819-1901). Apparently, while dusting the vase the maid broke it and felt so badly about it that the Duchess had it conserved and gifted it to maid. |
