Description |
Born in 1817 in Zanesville, Ohio, the artist James Pierce Barton studied at the National Academy of Art and Design in New York before returning to Muskingum County and becoming a preeminent portrait painter. Best known for his realistic and sensitive portrayals of prominent Muskingum County residents, Barton's paintings reflect the significant role portraits like these played in crafting identity in nineteenth-century cultural life. By 1864, Barton established a studio in Zanesville with William G. Starke, promoting themselves as "photograph artists and portrait painters." |
