Description |
What can we learn from a battle scene? Courtois, who was referred to by his Roman patrons as the "Raphael of battles," was regarded as one of the great battle scene painters of the seventeenth century. Specializing in both historical and imaginary conflicts, Courtois's detailed images celebrate national military victories and provide viewers with a firsthand account of the conflict's most dramatic movements, the participants heroism, and war's bloody consequences. |
