Description |
For nearly a century, Steubenville Pottery Company (1879–1959), located in Steubenville, Ohio manufactured a range of utilitarian pottery and tableware including the American Modern line designed by Russel Wright (1904-1976) and manufactured from 1939 to 1959. Advertised as versatile and sleek and featuring "29 lovely pieces to choose from in 5 delightful colors…tailored to your own taste…that will meet every service requirement", American Modern become one of the best-selling tableware lines in the nation. Now beloved for Wright’s modern, biomorphic forms, they were a radical departure in tableware design and as a result, it took the industrial designer several years to convince a manufacturer to produce this line. |
