Description |
Edward Tunnicliffe (1813-1903) was one of many emigrant potters from England in the 19th century. In 1841 he traveled to East Liverpool, Ohio to assist James Bennet (1812-1862), another emigrant potter from North Staffordshire, and his three brothers in producing yellow ware, products produced from a yellow-tinted earthenware. He opened his own pottery in Zanesville, Ohio in 1848 and specialized in Rockingham Ware, an inexpensive, brown-glazed earthenware inspired by works produced at the original Rockingham Pottery in England who produced elaborate, Rococo-inspired decorative pieces. Tunnicliff closed his pottery in 1953 and moved to Kewanee, Illinois. This piece was donated to the Zanesville Museum of Art by a direct decendant of Edward Tunnicliffe, Steven Tunnicliffe. |
