Description |
The American Encaustic Tiling Company (1875-1935) was founded in 1875 in Zanesville, Ohio by E.H. Hall with the backing of New York businessmen Benedict Fischer and George R. Lansing. Mechanical Engineer George Stanberry became superintendent in 1876 and helped American Encaustic Tiling Company use machinery to mass-produce tiles on a scale unseen in the United States. The company grew rapidly, having to move to larger factories twice by 1892. Sculptor Herman Mueller and chemist Karl Langenbeck helped the company produce more tiles and grow even faster. On April 19, 1892, a new factory was opened on Linden Avenue in Zanesville and was marketed as the largest tile factory on the planet. In 1894, Mueller and Langenbeck left American Encaustic to start their own tile company, the Mosaic Tile Company. In 1917, popular designer Frederick Hurten Rhead (1880-1942) came to American Encaustic, where he was the director of the research department. The American Encaustic Tiling Company continued producing tiles and pottery until the Zanesville factory closed in 1935. |
