Description |
This large jardinière is an example of Weller Pottery Company's early Louwelsa line, which was introduced in 1896. The Louwelsa line was personal to the owner of the concern, Sam Weller, who named the line using the first three letters of Louise, his daughter's name, the first three letters of Weller, and the first two initials of Sam. This piece was hand painted and features a portrait of a Arab man wearing a traditional headdress, including a ghutrah and an agal. Commonly worn by people inhabiting arid regions, the ghutrah provides protection from sunburn, dust, and sand. |
