Description |
A British artist born in Kolkata, India, James Alexander Walker (1841-1898) spent most of his life in Paris, France. Although little is known about his formal training, Walker is best known for realistic historical and military scenes in the manner of renowned French painters Horace Vernet and Edward Meissonier. This oil painting, Soldiers in Winter (Artillery Scene), was painted in 1880, and likely depicts the siege of Paris from September 1870 through January 1871, which signaled the defeat of France by the Prussians in the Franco-Prussian War. |
