Description |
This Chinese ancestral portrait from the Daoguang Period (1820-1850) depicts the prominent wife of a Mandarin official from the 9th Civil Rank, which is symbolized by the Paradise Flycatcher bird embroidered on the front of the woman's elaborate robe. The Chinese name for these birds, shoudai niao, describes their long ribbon-like tails and is a homophone for the term shou or longevity. Symbols of longevity are prevalent in this painting and include the decorative rug, the swastika and sauwastika symbols, the sun, and the five-bat design. This painting, and the companion portrait, was given to the Zanesville Museum of Art by Iris Wykoff Sawyer as a bequest in 1994. It has been suggested that the paintings were given to her after 1929 by Wu Tsai-His, the Ambassador of Manchuria, and a wealthy collector of Asian art. |
