Description |
This painting was created in 1979 by the nationally recognized African-American artist Roman Johnson (1917-2005). Johnson was born in 1917 in Columbus, Ohio and studied at the Art Students League in New York before studying art in Paris, France. Focused on themes like social justice, and interested in portrait and landscape paintings, Johnson was a prominent painter who worked with Edwin Dickinson, Ernest Fiene, Cletus Butler, and Emerson Burkhart. This painting was donated to the Zanesville Museum of Art by Mrs. Ursel White Lewis, considered one of the first African American women patrons in Columbus, Ohio. |
