Description |
The Nelson McCoy Pottery Company (1933-1967), formerly known as the Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Company, was founded by Nelson McCoy and J.W. McCoy in Roseville, Ohio. In 1933, the name was changed to the Nelson McCoy Pottery Company. The company was one of the first in the area to use a tunnel kiln for firing pottery. Technologically advanced, the Nelson McCoy Pottery Company utilized circular kilns, vertical dryers, and even a "vacuum de-airing machine" in the 1930s. This technology allowed the company to produce up to 5,000 pieces over a 24 hour period. Like many potteries in the area, Nelson McCoy Pottery Company was struck by a fire in 1950. However, the company rebuilt and continued producing pottery until it was sold to Mount Clemens Pottery Company in 1967. |
