Title |
Bishop or Saint Healing the Sick |
Date |
Circa 1220 |
Description |
This small, French, stained-glass panel is titled the Bishop / Saint Healing the Sick and can be dated to circa 1220 based on the style of the drapery folds. Believed to School of Champagne, France, this panel is similar to those found in Bourges Cathedral and depicts the raising of the Shunamite woman's body by the prophet Elisha, related to the fourth chapter of the Second Book of Kings. The medieval mind delighted to read the Old Testament as a prophecy of the New, and this incident was taken to be a prefiguration of the raising of Lazarus by Jesus. |
