Description |
The Mosaic Tile Company (1894-1967) was founded in 1894 in Zanesville, Ohio by Herman C. Mueller, Karl Langenbeck, and William M. Shinnick. Mueller and Lengenbeck both left American Encaustic Tiling Company to begin this new company. The factory was initially on Coopermill Road in Zanesville and at that time Mosaic Tile Company had only 30 employees. However, continued growth allowed the company in 1901 to open a new eight story factory in New York. By 1920, designer Harry W. Rhead (1881-1950) was hired and the company began producing faience tiles. Competing with American Encaustic Tiling Company as the second largest tile manufacturer in the United States, Mosaic saw tremendous growth over the 1920s and 1930s, with peak production coming in 1941. Mosaic Tile Company continued in Zanesville until 1967, when the Marmon Group of Chicago took over. |
