Description |
The Clewell Pottery Company (1906-1965) was founded and operated by Charles Walter Clewell (1876-1965) in 1876 in Canton, Ohio. Clewell's unique electroplating technique that combined bronze and ceramic was inspired by a Roman bronze wine jug he saw at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. He experimented extensively to apply the bronze and chemically treat it to achieve just the right color. It was not uncommon for Clewell to purchase blanks from other well-known Ohio pottery companies such as the Weller, J.B. Owens, and Rookwood Pottery Companies, and apply his electroplating techniques to sell as Clewell Ware. Clewell never shared his methods with anyone and his work has never been replicated. |
