Description |
This painting was donated to the museum in 1940 by long-time Zanesville resident, passionate patron of the arts, music instructor, and opera singer Mrs. Katherine B. Geis. Painted by the well-known Dutch Rococo artist and actor Cornelis Troost (1696-1750), this scene captures a realistic, detailed, and spirited interior scene, featuring musicians performing or practicing. Troost was referred to as the Dutch Hogarth and chose to draw or paint realistic, playful, and sometimes satirical depictions of everyday life. What set the Dutch artist apart from his contemporaries was his choice of subject matter. Troost favored the performers, actors, and musicians of his day. |
