Katherine Geis, a Zanesville-Ohio native, was a professional music teacher and opera singer. While she made her first theatrical appearance at the age of five as a midshipman in "Pinafore," the comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, she went on to enroll at the Cincinnati College of Music where she won the Springer Gold Medal for voice. After her graduation, Geis performed at the Schultz Opera House in Zanesville, Ohio, with the Airon Opera Company, and became the pianist and director of the Weller Theatre Orchestra. Mrs. Geis was a patron of the arts and donated the painting, "The Musical Interior," by Dutch artist Cornelius Troost to the Zanesville Art Institute, now the Zanesville Museum of Art, in October 1940. |
